| Today's Top Stories | | #1 | Apple envisions way to control 3D objects using 3D gestures | | | by Lance Whitney, CNET | | | You may be able to control objects on your future iPhone or iPad just by moving your fingers above the surface. More» Why This Matters: Good explanation of a new Apple patent that may enable you to control a touchscreen without—well—touching it. By the way Apple was granted 35 patents yesterday. Last week, it plunged to 79th on Forbes' annual list of most innovative companies (down from 5th in 2011). -Cynthia Wisehart | | | #2 | Reverse cord-cutting options for when TV networks and cable companies fight | | | by Michael Heiss, Residential Systems | | | Much has been made on this site and elsewhere over the trend of "cutting the cord", which is when consumers (your clients) wean themselves off the mother's milk of cable or satellite reception. The consumer cuts the cord by looking to other services and forms of delivery for video programming. To many pundits, it is the direction "TV" is going. | | #3 | New material could make for smart windows that adjust to building's needs | | | by Jon Timmer, Ars Technica | | | By passing a voltage through a specially designed glass, the researchers can switch it among three states: completely transparent, blocking infrared light, or blocking both infrared and visible wavelengths. More» Why This Matters: Super interesting research out of Berkeley. Not practical for production due to the cost of a key material (indium) and the small problem that the glass acts like a battery, which means it's reactive and it loses charge. However the technique does fire the imagination--embedded nanocrystals that allow a glass-like material to change transparency according to the voltage passed through it. Not just for smart windows but also for optics and displays. –Cynthia Wisehart | | | | | Find Us Online |
