"The issue is not whether or not the video traffic can be made to pass through the firewall. Rather, the issue is how difficult it is to configure the firewall to succeed at this task. Consider the following: (1) Inexpensive firewalls often can't be configured to handle some necessary tasks for passing RTP or RTSP streams. This would likely preclude their use in the consumer market. (2) HTTP doesn't separate the control signaling stream from the media delivery stream as is done with VoIP and video conferencing. (3) Firewalls have grown more complex but also more able to deal with the needs introduced by the newer protocols."
